Our recent press tour was a memorable journey filled with insightful experiences and impressions. Throughout the field trip, journalists and food bloggers from renowned German and French magazines had the opportunity to explore the work of our farmers in the tomato fields and our processors in the plant sites and to engage with local experts. The visit allowed to know how the tomato supply
chain is really like, discovering its environmental and social sustainability. From in-depth discussions and behind-the-scenes to capturing the beauty of the Parma region surroundings, the event offered a comprehensive perspective and plenty of moments worth reflecting on.
First day: An introduction to OI Pomodoro da Industria del Nord Italia
After greeting and welcoming our guests, we gave them an in-depth overview of our supply chain, its organization and its aim to promote a fair, competitive supply chain through cooperation, social responsibility, and sustainability. We described the ancient close cooperation between farmers and processors to grow and create European high quality tomato products. We presented the role of the Interbranch Organization, OI Pomodoro da Industria Nord Italia, that collects and elaborates crucial data about the tomato sector and help famers and processors to work together respecting common fair rules. We reiterated the goal of our Tomato SAUCE Project to spread awareness about the high sustainability standards of the European and northern Italian tomato processing industry. Since most participants were journalists and food bloggers in the German and French food industries, we shared some data about Italian tomato derivatives’ exports in France and Germany.
Second day: A Hands-On Experience in the Tomato Fields.
The second day of the field trip began with a visit to the tomato fields, where participants witnessed the harvesting process up close. Engaging directly with local farmers and experts of producers organizations, the group showed a keen interest in the agricultural side of tomato production, asking insightful questions about farming techniques and the characteristics of different tomato varieties, the water management and the distance from the field to the processing site. The interaction was dynamic and collaborative, with journalists taking the opportunity to learn and even sample the freshly harvested produce.
The group was introduced to the latest technological advancements in tomato harvesting. Modern machinery, equipped with cutting-edge technology, was demonstrated in action, showing how innovation is revolutionizing traditional farming methods. The participants were particularly captivated by these machines; precision and efficiency, which enhance productivity and contribute to more sustainable farming practices.
A light lunch at the beautiful Corte di Giarola, in the Taro River Natural Park, followed by a cultural visit at the Museum of Tomato was the perfect break.
In the afternoon, the group proceeded to a nearby tomato processing plant, gaining valuable insights into the facility’s sustainable washing and processing methods. Participants appreciated the transparency of the evaluation of each tomato delivery, that connects the quality of tomato with the price recognized by the industry to farmers. They observed innovative water recycling systems designed to reduce consumption and reuse of by-products for minimizing waste, as well as advanced processing techniques that ensure product quality while maintaining environmental responsibility. The experts at the plant shared how these sustainable practices enhance efficiency and set a benchmark for eco-friendly processing in the industry.
The day ended with a delightful dinner at the enchanting Castle Torrechiara, where the group gathered in an atmosphere of confidence and familiarity. To receive such positive feedback from the guests was priceless for OI Pomodoro del Nord Italia. The warm and welcoming ambiance fostered deeper connections, leaving everyone – guests and hosts alike – with a sense of shared purpose that made the experience truly unforgettable.
