The tomato processing industry plays a vital role in the global food sector, with Northern Italy being one of the most renowned regions for producing high-quality tomatoes and processed tomato products. We’re inviting journalists and food bloggers to a field trip to Parma, nestled in the heart of this region, to offer the unique opportunity to explore both the agricultural and industrial aspects of tomato processing while immersing in the rich cultural and culinary traditions of Northern Italy. Day 1: Arrival and first meeting with the Interbranch Organization
The Interbranch Organization OI Pomodoro Nord Italia will disclose its activities, its mission and its role for the tomato supply chain in Northern Italy. After that, participants will give the day a delicious ending in the historical city center of Parma, tasting tomato’s gourmet versatility. Being in Italy also means outstanding regional gastronomic experiences, after all.
Day 2: From Field to Factory
The most important day begins with a visit to the lush tomato fields of our supply chain’s collaborators. Here, participants will have the chance to see firsthand the meticulous farming practices that produce some of the world’s finest tomatoes. Local operators, farmers and technicians will guide the group through the fields, explaining the cultivation techniques, from selecting the best tomato varieties to the sustainable farming practices that ensure both quality and environmental responsibility. Attendees will witness the harvesting process, gaining insights into how timing and precision are crucial to maintain the tomatoes’ flavor and nutritional value.
Following a light lunch, the group will discover tomato processing discover tomato processing’s historical and technical evolution in northern Italy visiting the Tomato Museum, then it will head to the tomato processing facilities. The day will end with a dinner at the fascinating Torrechiara’s Castle, experiencing the countryside in all its beauty (and taste).
